As the ball drops to ring in a “New Year”, hundreds of people make commitments to lose weight, exercise, quit smoking, etc. Four out of five gym memberships go unused after the first two weeks. Of the people using memberships, many still struggle to reach their weight loss goals. Having said all that, many people do not keep their resolutions.
The element of human change that we fail to factor in is the mind. Humans are creatures of “sameness” as well as love doing what is familiar and comfortable. But know that we are not alone. If you don’t believe me just watch birds or other creatures. Each year, a pair of robins will build a nest in the same tree because it is familiar and it works for them. Salmon will swim upstream each year to spawn and die in the same spot their parents did. Birds migrate to the same area each year once the cold weather settles in, and humans drive the same route to work or school each day. Why? Because it works, it’s known and it is comfortable.

You change your thoughts, you change your life. You change your life, you change your world. Happy, optimistic and positive thoughts generate a spark in your body which makes the blood flow freely. It’s what gives you that pep in your step and vibrant heartbeat. Sad and pessimistic thoughts, on the other hand, take the joy out of life. It’s what keeps peace of mind away and restricts the blood flow. You can change your negative thoughts to positive ones.

If you are an emotional eater, you eat in response to your feelings. You know that food can sabotage your weight. Sometimes we eat out of boredom because we have nothing better to do. How do I know? Once upon a time, I ate a whole box of Girl Scout cookies with a pint of milk. That was a time when junk food ruled my belly. And a continuous cycle until I renewed my mind, body and spirit. How did I do this? It started with a healthy eating plan, some moderate exercise and a daily word to nourish my spirit. From there, I started to get back some energy. Not only did my mind change, but my body and spirit changed too. All of a sudden life looked good. That experience changed my whole perspective on diet and exercise.
